Most of the Nile will not see the 2027 eclipse.

On Monday 2 August 2027 the moon's shadow crosses Egypt in a band about 257 km wide. It covers the river from north of Asyut down to a point between Kom Ombo and Aswan. Everything north and south of that sees a partial eclipse, which is a different thing entirely.

Aswan, where most Nile cruises begin or end, is outside the path.

This page is geometry and weather, checked against the NASA path table and dated. It is the part of the question that can be answered today, without asking a single operator anything. What each vessel is actually doing that morning is a separate question and we do not have it yet.

Aswan does not see this eclipse.

Aswan city sits at 24.0889 N, 32.8998 E, roughly 20 kilometres south of the southern limit of the path. It sees a partial eclipse of 99.6 to 99.8 per cent. That sounds like almost the whole thing and it is not. At 99 per cent there is no corona, no visible stars, no horizon glow and no moment when it is safe to take the filter off. The difference between 99.8 per cent and totality is not a difference of degree.

The classic Nile cruise ends at Aswan. Any itinerary that has guests at Aswan on the morning of 2 August 2027 delivers a deep partial eclipse and not the event. To reach totality a boat has to be north of a line that crosses the river between Kom Ombo and Aswan, near Daraw.

The 20 kilometre figure is our interpolation from the NASA path table, not a published number. That Aswan is outside the path is not in doubt.

Where this goes wrong, and why it keeps going wrong

One widely reachable eclipse site publishes a page headed "Aswan" that reports the location as inside the path of totality with 6 min 22 sec.

It uses the centroid of Aswan Governorate, at 25.33646 N, 33.39489 E. The governorate is enormous and its centroid falls on the centre line, far to the northeast, in desert. It is not Aswan city, and nobody stands there.

Check that an eclipse lookup resolved to the town and not to the province. Several of the sellers we read appear to have made exactly this mistake. We checked what the sellers are claiming, one by one, on who is selling this and what they claim.

The river, north to south

A filled marker is inside the path of totality. An open one is not.

The band is the path of totality where it crosses the river. It is drawn on latitude alone, because that is the only axis the answer depends on. It is a diagram and not a map: the Nile swings far to the east through the Qena Bend, so nothing here is to scale on the ground.

Both limits are approximate. The northern one crosses somewhere near Mallawi or Dairut, the southern one near Daraw. Neither has been computed to the metre by us or by anyone we read, and the towns nearest each edge are the ones where that matters.

10 places are drawn and the table below carries 13. Abydos and Dendera are left off the diagram because they sit within a few kilometres of Sohag and Qena and their labels would land on top of them. Abu Simbel is left off because it is far enough south to stretch the whole strip to accommodate one place that is nowhere near the path. All three are in the table.

A blank duration is a value nobody has computed for that town, not a short one. Esna, Edfu, Kom Ombo, Abydos and Dendera are all inside the path, and we will not print a number for them that we produced by interpolating between their neighbours. Where totality is longest on the water

On the water, totality is longest where the centre line crosses the river, in the Sohag to Nag Hammadi to Qena reach. Published figures there run from 6 min 20 sec to 6 min 26 sec. The single longest point of the whole eclipse, 6 min 23.2 sec, is in desert northwest of the river and not on it.

We do not publish the length of the in-path river in kilometres. The Nile meanders, the Qena Bend adds a great deal of channel to very little latitude, and no source we found has measured it. A figure invented from the latitude span would be wrong by a wide margin.

This matters less than it sounds. The difference between the best reach of the river and Luxor is a few seconds out of about six minutes and twenty. Being inside the path at all is the decision. Optimising within it is not.

The timings at Luxor

Luxor is the only place on the river with a complete set of contact times from sources that agree. Everywhere else in the path, the partial phases run to a similar length and totality falls within a few minutes of these.

Two hours and forty-six minutes from first contact to last, of which six minutes and twenty-two seconds is the part you can look at. The sun is 82 degrees up, so the rest of it is spent standing in full August sun in Upper Egypt.

Egypt is on Eastern European Summer Time, UTC+3, on 2 August 2027. Egypt reintroduced daylight saving time in 2023. The rule runs from the last Friday of April to the last Thursday of October. For 2027 that is 30 April to 29 October, so 2 August falls inside it. Source, checked 13 September 2026. Egypt has changed its clock arrangements at short notice before. No such announcement exists as of 13 September 2026. If daylight saving were suspended, every local time on this page would move one hour earlier. The UTC instants would not move at all, which is why they are printed beside every local time here.

What it is like from a deck

Where in the sky will it be?

Almost straight up. The sun is 82 degrees above the horizon at Luxor at maximum, and its bearing is close to due south. This is not a low sun over a temple. Everybody on deck will be looking near the zenith, and the practical problem is neck strain, not sightlines.

Will the west bank get in the way?

No. At 82 degrees nothing on the ground can block it. Hills, temples, hotels and other boats are all irrelevant to whether you see it. This removes the one thing that usually decides where to stand at an eclipse.

Which side of the boat should I be on?

Neither. With the sun near the zenith there is no port or starboard side to it in any meaningful sense. What matters is open sky above the deck, which means the sun deck rather than a cabin balcony, and it means shade structures and awnings decide the view.

Does the boat have to be moving?

No, and there is a reason to prefer it moored. A moored boat is a stable platform for a camera or a tripod and a moving one is not. Totality lasts about six minutes and the sun is high, so there is nothing to chase.

How long is the whole thing, not just totality?

At Luxor the partial phases start at 11:40 local and the last of it leaves the sun at 14:27 local. That is two hours and forty-six minutes in the open, in August, in Upper Egypt. Totality is six minutes of it.

The channel bearings at Luxor, Esna, Edfu and Kom Ombo are described in the sources only in words, never in degrees. Because the sun is nearly overhead the bearing does not change the answer, which is why we are comfortable publishing the answer without it.

Weather, and the thing that is actually a risk

Upper Egypt in early August has some of the most reliable eclipse weather on the entire path. Cloud is close to a non-issue. Heat is not.

The 80 per cent figure repeated across seller pages is more pessimistic than the satellite record and its provenance is not a station mean. We list it because it is what is being quoted, not because we think it is the better number. Keep the two apart: a 17 year average high of 42 C and a single 48 C day in 2025 are different kinds of fact. The risk in Upper Egypt in August is heat, not cloud.

Eyes

During totality only, and only inside the path, it is safe to look at the eclipse with the naked eye. That is the whole point of being inside the path.

At every other moment, including every partial phase before and after totality, and everywhere outside the path, direct viewing is unsafe. That covers Cairo, Aswan, Abu Simbel, Alexandria and Sharm el Sheikh for the entire event.

Filters

Filters must meet ISO 12312-2. Sunglasses are not a filter, however dark. Welding glass of shade 12 or higher is an accepted alternative for looking with the eye.

When totality ends

Put the filter back on the instant the first bright sliver returns at the end of totality. The diamond ring is the signal to stop looking, not to keep looking.

Cameras and binoculars

Cameras, phones, binoculars and telescopes need a dedicated solar filter over the front of the lens during all partial phases. Magnified unfiltered sun through a viewfinder can injure an eye instantly and permanently, and it will destroy a sensor.

This is the one section here that is not our research. It is what the eye and astronomy bodies say, and we are repeating it rather than paraphrasing it: American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Astronomical Society, NASA.

What the Egyptian authorities have said, and what they have not

Egypt's Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Sherif Fathy, has issued a ministerial decree establishing a high-level committee, chaired by the minister, to organise events around the eclipse at Luxor. It includes the Egyptian Tourism Promotion Authority, the Supreme Council of Antiquities and the Federation of Tourism Chambers, and it is tasked with logistics, crowd management and avoiding overcrowding at the main sites.

This is the largest open question on the page and it affects every boat on the river. A cruise sold today with a promised mooring inside the path is being sold against rules nobody has published yet. That is not an accusation, it is the state of the information.

One operator states it has ministry permission to open the normally closed Lost Golden City excavation for its guests on eclipse day. That is the operator's claim, not a published government notice, and we have not seen it confirmed.

The last one was in 2006, and it was not on the river

The last total eclipse over Egypt was on 29 March 2006. Its path crossed the northwest desert near the Libyan border, not the Nile valley, so there is no published account anywhere of watching a total eclipse from a boat on the Nile. Nobody selling 2027 has done this before either.

  • The main organised site was a military base at Salloum, on the coast, almost exactly on the centre line.
  • Roughly 8,000 tourists attended, with hundreds of journalists, and President Mubarak and several ministers were present.
  • Totality at Salloum lasted about 3 min 57 sec. The longest anywhere on that path was 4 min 7 sec, in Libya.
  • Authorities closed the roads and required every group to be in position by 08:00, hours before the partial phases began.
  • Skies were clear at Salloum and across the Libyan desert leg.

The 08:00 road closure is the transferable detail. Access in Egypt on an eclipse morning was decided by the state, announced late, and enforced early. A boat already moored inside the path is insulated from that in a way a coach transfer is not. That is an argument for the river, and it is the only evidence-backed one we have found.

What we could not establish

Every page on this site carries one of these. This is the eclipse version, and it is longer than we would like.

  • Computed totality durations for Esna, Edfu, Kom Ombo, Abydos and Dendera. Position tells us they are inside the path. It does not give us a number, and we are not interpolating one.
  • Contact times for most towns. Only Luxor, Asyut and Cairo have a full set.
  • Distance from the centre line, in kilometres, for every town except Aswan, where our own figure is an approximation.
  • The length of the in-path Nile in kilometres, and the length of the reach where totality exceeds six minutes.
  • Whether Hurghada is inside the path. Four sources, two answers.
  • Minya's status, confirmed against a source computed for the town.
  • Partial magnitudes for Alexandria and Sharm el Sheikh.
  • Sunrise and sunset at Luxor on 2 August 2027 from an ephemeris. We have climatological approximations of about 05:20 and about 18:57 local and have not printed them as exact times.
  • Every official rule for eclipse day listed above.
  • Which vessels in our record are sailing inside the path that morning. We are asking the operators. That table is the next thing to go up here.

Who is selling this, and does their geography hold up

16 sellers have an eclipse product on the record, 12 of them on the Nile. We took the geographic claim each one makes and checked it against the path. One is wrong about Aswan, one overstates the centre line, and 2 do not say where the boat will be at all.
