The Oberoi Zahra

Small river ship. Operated by Oberoi Hotels & Resorts.

Sailing, two sources  checked 12 Sep 2026

Our view

hotel-standard luxury

Zahra is the flagship of the two Oberoi ships and the more awarded of them, with a named Egyptian ministry award from 2009 and 2012 and a readers' ranking in 2025 and 2026. The frustration is arithmetic rather than comfort: the cabin count, the guest count, the length and the rate are all contested or unpublished, and Oberoi's own pages sell two different night counts. Book it for the service and ignore every number you see about it that did not come from Oberoi in writing.

Who it suits

  • Travellers who want hotel standards on the river
  • Couples travelling without children
  • Guests who need a lift, two independent accounts describe one
  • Anyone who wants a choice of three, four or seven nights

Who it does not suit

  • Families, children under seven are not accommodated
  • Anyone who wants a rate from the operator, the only published figure comes from a third party seller and is a packaged trip total divided out by night
  • Travellers comparing cabin counts, Oberoi says 28 and most of the trade says 27 and nobody explains the gap
  • Anyone booking a June departure, the published calendar has a June gap in both 2026 and 2027 that Oberoi does not explain
  • Guests who want to know how long the boat is, every published length is implausible and we record none
Service style
Hotel service model run by a hotel company, with meals, transfers, entrance fees, guiding and internet included and a turndown service.
The cabin we would book
A Luxury Suite. Zahra's three cabin categories differ mainly by floor space, and the suite is the only one Oberoi describes separately.
Nearest alternative: The Oberoi Philae
Same company, same standards, same ports and the same two departure days. Zahra is the larger and newer hull at 54 guests with three, four and seven night options. Philae takes 44 and sells four and six nights. See its record →
Everything in this box is opinion, not a sourced fact, and we say what it rests on: desk research only, by Christoph Paterok, 12 September 2026. Nobody here has sailed this vessel. Read it as a careful reading of the published record, which is what it is.
Published rate
$748 per person, per night

Shown in the currency the operator published it in, on the basis the operator sells it on. We do not convert currencies and we do not divide a package total into a nightly rate, because both would produce a number nobody quoted. See how this compares on the rates page.

What we could not establish

Every empty cell above has a reason. These are the reasons for this vessel, written down at the time the record was made, including the places where published sources contradict each other.

Cabin count is unresolved. Oberoi's accommodation page says 28 cabins and suites across three categories. Third parties including Travel + Leisure say 27, usually broken out as 25 Luxury Cabins plus 2 Luxury Suites. The gap is probably accounted for by the Luxury Suite with Two Bedrooms, but no source says so. The suite count was left empty for the same reason. Oberoi names two suite categories and publishes no count for either.

No length is recorded. Tauck, CruiseMapper, Global Journeys and RiverCruise.com all publish 236 m or 774 ft. That figure is implausible for a 27-cabin Nile vessel with a 14 m beam and appears to be a shared upstream error. No credible length was found.

No refit year was found anywhere. Oberoi publishes no refit statement on the vessel, highlights, policies or awards pages. The only dry dock references we found were a 2018 reviewer noting the vessel was heading to dry dock that June, with no outcome recorded, and a search snippet claiming a scheduled dry dock from 1 June to 5 July 2027. That second claim was not confirmed on a retrieved page and is not recorded. It would explain the June gap in the published sailing calendar, but the same June gap exists in 2026 as well, so one dry dock does not account for it.

No rate is published by the operator anywhere on the site. Everything sits inside the booking engine, which has no plain URL. The rate we have recorded comes from one third-party seller and is a packaged per-person trip total including excursions and transfers, divided out to a nightly figure. It should not be treated as an Oberoi fare.

The guest capacity is contested at 50 versus 54 and neither figure comes from Oberoi.

No charter availability, charter minimum or charter rate was found. Tauck sells chartered departures on the vessel, which implies whole-boat charter happens, but no charter terms or rate are published.

Oberoi's own pages disagree with each other on cruise length. The booking form sells 2 and 3-night trips while the calendar and itineraries pages sell 3, 4 and 7-night trips. A reader comparing the vessel page with the sailing dates page will find two different products described.

Recorded 12 September 2026. If you can settle any of these, tell us and we will correct the record in public.

Press

Travel + Leisure 07 Jul 2026
Read on Yahoo Travel's syndicated copy of the Travel + Leisure article. The piece names the "27-cabin Oberoi Zahra", which conflicts with Oberoi's own published figure of 28 cabins. The syndicated copy may differ from the original, so this figure is not used here.
